The Fishees Journey

A cat sitter by trade, I really know cats.  I have my own princess at home who I have always struggled to get to play with conventional toys - until I found the catnip blend I went on to use in Fishees.  Tested on 50 cats at prototype stage, the research you can find online proved that the 70%/30% split of cats who are affected by catnip was true!  Around 35 of these cats went crazy for the Fishees, the other 15 either showed no interest or very little.  Being interested in catnip is genetic to cats, and kittens don't generally grow an interest until 4-8 months old.

Fishees are approx 16cm x 5cm, made from high grade craft thread, 100% cotton, polycotton, or acrylic felt (depending on which you choose), polyester satin ribbon, and stuffed with approximately 6-10g of premium Canadian leaf and bud/powder catnip.  Please note there may be a slight size and weight difference fish to fish, as well as shape, as I hand sew and stuff each Fishee myself.  Since these toys are made 'personally', stitching may or may not be straight - I'm not lucky enough to have a warehouse or always a steady hand!

At the end of each month, 10% of each sale from the month will be donated to Lost & Found Cats In Norwich, a local rescue who help to reunite and rehome hundreds of cats every year.

FAQs

What Is Catnip & Will My Cat Like It?

Catnip (or known to some as Catmint) is a natural and fun member of the mint family, which causes a harmless europhia to come over your cat for a few minutes or whilst at play.  It doesn't affect all cats, but I have found through experience that not all catnip is the same, which is why I have searched for the best catnip for my Fishees.  My own cat doesn't react to most types of nip, but this one she comes back to time and time again.

Oh, and don't worry about the smell of the catnip - it is often likened to cannabis!

What Can I Expect From My Cat?

As previously mentioned, not all cats react to catnip, but this strong Canadian blend that I use to stuff the Fishees with is very high potency and has got even the most stubborn cats to play!  Your cat will likely rub and fuss around the fish, and may seem a bit mad whilst doing so!  Some cats like to suck catnip toys, some like to throw them around (the branding tag is quite popular for carrying them around too!).  If your cat is under 8 months old they may not react as much as an adult cat, so give it a few months and you may find they take a sudden interest!  Around 30% of cats aren't affected by catnip, and it is apparently a genetic pattern, so if they show no interest they are unlikely to suddenly decide they like it!

You may find a specific material gets a better reaction from your cat and the way they play.  Here is a guide to the materials I use:

Cotton:  Good for cats who prefer to rub and lay on their catnip toys, also very good for flinging around!  Not so good if your cat likes to suck toys, as the catnip is likely to come through the material - needing quicker replacement.

Felt:  Seems to be more durable for cats who like to mutilate their toys and particularly those more affected by catnip.  Some cats prefer the texture of felt too. In my tests, felt seemed to be better for cats who suck and wet their toys as the catnip didn't soak through as much.  Felt is also good at holding catnip spray if you want to give it a refresh!

What Are Fishees Made From, How Durable Are They & How Long Will The Catnip Last?

Fishees are approx 16cm x 5cm, made from high grade craft thread, 100% cotton, polycotton, or acrylic felt (depending on which you choose), polyester satin ribbon and stuffed with approximately 6-10g of premium Canadian leaf and bud/powder catnip.  Please note there may be a slight size, shape and weight difference fish to fish, as I hand sew and stuff each Fishee myself.

They are sewn from the inside, with a small seam for stuffing and the branding label.  Since these toys are made 'personally', stitching may or may not be straight - I'm not lucky enough to have a warehouse or always a steady hand!

Durability depends on how your cat plays - catnip soaking through is inevitable if your cat drools and sucks during play, and no toy will last forever where teeth and claws are involved! I wouldn't recommend washing the toys as I cannot guarantee the materials will hold their colour, and also this may contaminate or lessen the effect of the catnip. Please always supervise play and replace Fishees when they start to wear.  This may be faster for those whose owners are more zealous than others!

All catnip will lose its potency over time.  There is no guarantee on how long the catnip will still have its potency for - this all depends on time and how much the fish is played with, if it becomes wet or not and room temperatures.  With other toys with similar grade catnip and outer materials I have heard of it lasting months and even up to a year!

Can I Mix & Match?

Each Fishee is sold as a single item, apart from the double packs under the Value Packs section on the Shop page.  You are of course welcome to purchase however many you like,  but single Fishees won't receive the discount set for the Value Pack products due to material cost.  Single Fishees and Value Packs include untracked second class postage free of charge - if you choose to upgrade your postage to a tracked or signed for service there is a flat charge per order, not per fish.
